Scottish Mathletics Championship

"Our participation in the Scottish Mathletics Championship led to probably the most exciting week in school we have ever experienced. We decided to try and acquire as much time in ICT suites as we could. As it so happens the timetable was perfect on the Monday with lots of S1 and S2 classes in Maths and also available computer rooms in Computing, Business Studies , Technical and the Library."

"When I checked how we were doing at the end of the Monday I was astounded, over 100,000 points! It then just took off. Pupils were competing before school started, at intervals and at lunchtimes. At lunchtime on the Thursday we had four ICT suites, the library and we had to turn to pupils away! It now was the talk of the school Calvin Bennie, our top pupil, had become a Maths superstar and was known throughout the school. 'How are we doing?' was the question constantly being asked by pupils and staff. By Friday and the finish of the competition we had over a million points and just beaten by a truly superb effort from George Watsons Junior School. The pupils and staff cannot wait until the next competition. "

Press Release - Grace Gets Gold

Swallowfield Lower School have recently taken on Mathletics as a whole school initiative. After the initial success of the Year 2 students last year we decided to give the whole school the opportunity to compete. The children thoroughly enjoy working on Mathletics both the practices that we set them and Live! Mathletics We have seen improvements in the results of the National Tests for Maths as the children are so much more confident in their own ability and mathematical knowledge.

To raise the profile of Mathletics within the school we print out and share silver awards in our weekly celebration assembly. Our class also has our own mathlete of the week competition and add up our weekly total of points scored as a class. We then try to better this each week. We ensure that all children have access to the site either at home or in school, with timetabled slots and now a lunchtime club too! We even combined Live! Mathletics with our geography work for our international award, finding out more about the countries of other mathletes.

This week were extremely excited as our first pupil achieved her gold Mathletics award. After lots of hard work and determination Grace Toomey, aged 7, earned the final few points needed to get the award. The award is now the centre piece of our Mathletics display and will be presented to Grace at our next whole school celebration assembly.

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls

Maths Challenge fever took hold at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls for 14 days in June as Year 7 battled it out with the Specialist Schools all over the country to become the Mathletics Champions for 2008. It was a stunning achievement by everyone taking part - gaining nearly 2 million points from as many correct answers over the two weeks. A quite incredible feat for just 150 girls. Competition was fierce nationally and the girls showed tremendous enthusiasm for the challenge and real determination to sustain their lead over such a long period. The thrill of the competition was summed up beautifully by two girls who took part. they said;

"Mathletics was a mind blowing experience, stimulating those parts of the brain which we usually don't bother using! It was challenging, competitive, inspiring, educational and enjoyable to do! We played against pupils across the globe, from the UK, Netherlands, Sweden, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, USA, Australia, New Zealand and the list goes on. There were live challenges and questions, which had to be answered in one minute, so you needed to be quick on the digits to get yourself a good score. The excitement and buzz we felt while playing in those 2 weeks encouraged us to play late at night, once involved we didn't want to stop."

This will be an unforgettable experience for those girls and will have done much to enhance the status of Maths as a "cool" subject to enjoy for all involved.

Harry Adds Up to World Number One "Mathlete"
Nottingham High Junior School pupil, Harry Croasdale, age 8, took the top spot as the number one 'mathlete' in the world after competing against children from all over globe.

After taking part in real-time Maths speed and skill challenges over the internet on World Maths Day in March, Harry continued regularly playing games on the live mathematics game engine on the Mathletics website. Last week, after playing 120 games against competitors from countries as far afield as Indonesia, Hong Kong, South Africa and Bahrain, Harry finished the day as world number one.

Harry, from West Bridgford, said: "When I saw I was fifth in the table, it encouraged me to do more games, and soon I was on top. I got up very early next morning to do more and keep my top spot. I had a great week because the following day I won an under nine chess competition for boys from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire."

All of the pupils at Nottingham High Junior School took part in the World Maths Day challenge, with each of the eight classes spending 35 minutes in the School's ICT suite. Harry's class, 4S and class 6D, received a year's subscription to the Mathletics websites due to their performance on World Maths Day. Harry's form teacher, Anthony Simpson, said: "Harry loves maths and does very well in the subject at school. We're all very proud of him, it's an exceptional achievement to be top of the table for the whole world."
